The Department's annual Air Quality Assessment reveals that concentrations of six key pollutants have declined by an average of 12% over the past two years, with the most significant improvements in ozone and particulate matter levels.

Key Findings

  • Ozone levels decreased by 15% in monitored urban areas
  • Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) levels dropped by 11% nationwide
  • The number of counties meeting all air quality standards increased from 82% to 87%
  • Air toxic emissions from industrial sources declined by 18%

"These results demonstrate that strong environmental protections and economic growth can go hand in hand," said Dr. Patricia Hawkins, Director of the Office of Clean Air and Climate.
