Department Finalizes Historic PFAS Drinking Water Standards

Clean drinking water testing

The U.S. Department of Environmental Stewardship today announced final drinking water standards for six per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), marking the first-ever federal limits on these persistent chemicals in drinking water.

Key Provisions

  • Maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) set at 4 parts per trillion for PFOA and PFOS
  • Combined MCL of 10 parts per trillion for four additional PFAS compounds
  • Public water systems must monitor for PFAS and notify the public of violations
  • Compliance deadline: Three years from publication in the Federal Register

Funding Support

The Department is making $9 billion available through the Clean Water Infrastructure Grant Program to help communities install treatment systems and address PFAS contamination.

"These standards will protect millions of Americans from the harmful effects of PFAS contamination," said Secretary Foster. "No family should have to worry about whether their drinking water is safe."
